Good morning, friends! Pull up a chair on the porch — Uncle Ricky, Biscuit, and Olive have a verse to share with you today.
Uncle Ricky: Good Sunday morning, friends! Come on out on the porch — the sun is shining, the coffee is on, and it is the Lord’s Day.
Biscuit: Sunday already, Uncle Ricky? I was just getting good at Saturday. My plan this morning was to stay curled up in my blanket and be glad right where I was.
Olive: Oh, I was glad before my feet even touched the branch! The sun came up, the sky turned gold, and I just knew — today is a day to sing about!
Uncle Ricky: Ha! Well, Olive, you are already living today’s verse, and Biscuit, you have asked the very question David answered a long time ago. Listen to Psalm 122, verse 1: “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”
Biscuit: Wait — glad? Not sleepy, not rushed, not checking if his robe was wrinkled? David was GLAD when somebody said, let’s go?
Uncle Ricky: That is exactly what he said, Biscuit. I was glad. Going to the house of the LORD was not a chore he had to check off a list. It was good news to his heart. Somebody invited him, and his heart lit right up. Now isn’t that exciting?
Olive: An invitation made him glad! Like when somebody knocks and says, come on, we’re going together!
Uncle Ricky: That is right, Olive. Notice it says, they said unto ME. Gladness started with an invitation, and it was an invitation to go TOGETHER. Let US go — not let me go all alone. God’s house was never meant to be a lonely place. We go together, we sing together, we hear His Word together.
Biscuit: Okay, but here’s my honest question. What if somebody wakes up tired, or sad, or carrying a whole heavy week? Can they still be glad to go? Or do you have to feel glad first before you walk in?
Uncle Ricky: Oh, that is a fine question, son. David does not say I was glad because everything in my life was perfect. He says I was glad when they said, let us go. The gladness came from WHERE he was going and WHO he would meet there. You do not have to fix your whole week before you go to God’s house. You bring your tired heart just as it is, and you let the Lord refresh it there.
Olive: So even a tired heart can sing? Even if the song starts out real quiet?
Uncle Ricky: Even then, Olive. Sometimes the gladness grows while you are there — in the singing, in the praying, in hearing a verse that feels like it was saved just for you. I’d call that a gift from God, wouldn’t you?
Biscuit: Hmm. So it’s not glad because the week was easy. It’s glad because God’s house is where a tired heart gets filled back up.
Uncle Ricky: Now you’re preaching, Biscuit! That is it exactly. And friends, this verse is also a gentle nudge for the rest of us. Somebody’s gladness might start with YOUR invitation today. A call, a kind word, a simple, come sit with us. You never know whose heart will light up because you asked.
Olive: Then I’m inviting everybody! Come on! Let us go! I’ll save a place on the branch — I mean, on the pew!
Biscuit: And I’ll uncurl from my blanket. Number one helper reporting for Sunday duty — still a little sleepy, but glad. Really glad.
Uncle Ricky: Ha! That is the spirit, both of you. Friends, let’s pray together. Father, thank You for this Sunday, and thank You for Your house, where Your people gather in Your name. Thank You for every invitation that ever brought us through those doors. Give glad hearts to the tired today, refresh the sad, and help us invite somebody else to come and worship with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Uncle Ricky: I was glad when they said unto me, friends. Let us go into the house of the LORD — go glad today, invite somebody to go with you, and let the Lord fill your heart all over again. Doesn’t that make you feel great?
